The Bhagat Phool Singh University is the Only Womens University in the North India and the series of events such as Suicide cases, molestation and barging in by the outsiders and recently the kidnap and gang rape of a first year student of LLB has raised all important question on the safety of girls within the college premises. It has been shocking to se the response of the university authorities and their only focus has been on concealing the facts and providing an explanation which is not adequate. The girl didn’t not share the incident with any one for more than 24 hours and it was only the probing of her hostel mates which enabled the girl to express the truth openly. One of the students spoke to the media and shared that the Chief Warden even after knowing the truth was making an attempt to suppress the case and conceal the facts. The Vice Chancellor – Mr. Pankaj Mallik had denied the charges and has imposed the blame on the parents of the girl on the reasons that the parents were reluctant to approach the Police.
It has been not the first instance when such a case has been reported in the Bhagat Phool Singh University. In the last two months four girls have committed suicide in the same university. The past events should have raised the warning bell for the university authorities to take suitable actions. The students of the University took up the initiative and in protest blocked the roads. They also staged a Dharna outside the university for three consecutive days. The pressure exerted by the students has led to concrete actions taken by the Police expeditiously as a result of which the three main accused were tracked down within 12 hours of lodging the complaint. The magnitude of the callousness of the university authorities can be inferred from the fact that the prime accused continued to stay in the hostel after the gang rape and even threatened the victim not to speak out. Some of the students of the university have stated that the accused has used to get drunk regularly and often teased the girls.
In the light of the above facts it is clearly evident that such kind of violence can only perpetuate in institutions which is nor only ignorant but extremely irresponsible in its conduct. There is a need for the State Government and Police authorities to deal with the situation with both sensitivity and urgency. Most importantly certain concrete steps has to be taken against the University which has been negligent, irresponsible and incompetent in dealing with the matter.
